Animal Medical Clinic was founded in 1964 by Drs. Harold Nelson and Charles Joiner. They had been classmates and friends in veterinary school at Auburn University, where they graduated in 1960. Harold was born and raised in the Melbourne area, and talked his friend Charlie into going into practice with him here.
Everyone wondered why they would build a veterinary clinic so far out of town because there was nothing else built around the property on South Babcock Street. The street was only paved as far south as Palm Bay Road, where it became a dirt road. But the area grew and the Clinic grew with it, undergoing a major addition in the 1970’s, followed by additions in 1986 and 2000.
Dr. Jeff Godwin joined the practice in 1981. Dr. Charlie Joiner’s son Steve had grown up in and around the practice, and when he graduated in 1984, he joined the practice too. The Drs. Joiner and Dr. Godwin partnered together until Dr. Charlie’s retirement in 1991. Dr. Mike Thomson joined the practice in 2003 and Dr. Robert Young in 2006. Drs. Godwin, Joiner, Thomson and Young are the owners of the practice today.
What makes AMC successful is the staff. We have a fantastic team of dedicated doctors, Certified Veterinary Technicians, client service representatives, veterinary assistants, kennel staff, pharmacy techs and custodial staff. Seventeen of our staff members have been with us for over ten years.
The practice has continued to grow, and in recent years we have added two additional locations on the beach. We purchased Indialantic Veterinary Hospital in 2015 and recently purchased Melbourne Beach Animal Clinic. These expansions have resulted in a team of 11 veterinarians and a total staff of about 60 people who are passionate about animals and find fulfillment in caring for them. It is our mission to maintain and improve the health of our patients through high quality medicine and exceptional client service. We thank you, our clients, for making all of this possible, and we look forward to serving you as we enter our 53rd year!
