Fleas are very common in Florida. Our temperature and humidity is perfect for them for the most part of the year and even when it is cold outside, our houses are nice and warm and hospitable for fleas.
Some people believe that fleas only infest outdoor animals, but they can also become a problem for indoor pets. Most dogs, at least, go outside regularly or occasionally to do their business, hop in the car for an errand, or go to the dog park or groomer. These are all opportunities to pick up some fleas and carry them inside. We can even be the carrier of fleas ourselves if they jump on our clothing or shoes.
Once fleas get inside they can reproduce very quickly, and if left untreated, they can create an infestation in no time. That is why flea prevention is recommended for all pets, year round. You may not know that an infestation is brewing until there are hundreds of fleas in the home. This is because fleas have definite species preferences. The common flea prefers dogs. Cats are second choice, and only if there are no animals around will they bite people. So your pets will be suffering long before you are.
If you don’t have a flea problem, make sure you are using an effective monthly flea preventive medication. Ask your veterinarian for a recommendation. If you have discovered a flea problem, then you will have to treat the house and maybe the yard too. Once again, ask your veterinarian for advice.
